According to new study, whether you’re an ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph influences certain important hormonal and sympathetic nervous system features. And these traits are related to some fascinating metabolic variations among individuals. Specifically:

Ectomorphs, or slim people with smaller bone structures and usually thinner limbs – think endurance athletes – have a thyroid and SNS dominance, with greater output or sensitivity to catecholamines such as epinephrine and norepinephrine.

This profile is associated with a rapid metabolic rate and a greater glucose tolerance (and needs).

As a consequence, ectomorphs perform best on diets that are rich in carbohydrates, moderate in protein, and low in fat. For this kind of athlete, a normal diet might consist of 55 percent carbohydrates, 25 percent protein, and 20 percent fat.

Mesomorphs — people with a medium-sized bone structure and athletic bodies that contain a considerable amount of lean mass – such as gymnasts – are testosterone and growth hormone dominating.

This profile indicates a proclivity for muscle growth and the maintenance of a low body fat percentage.

As a consequence, a varied diet with a healthy balance of carbs, proteins, and fats works best for mesomorphs. A zone-style diet does indeed work well for this kind of person. And the diet would consist of about 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 30% fat.

Endomorphs, or those with a bigger bone structure, more overall body mass, and more fat mass — think power lifters – are more likely to be PNS dominant. They are less active in general and are less effective at burning calories.

This profile leads to a higher proclivity to store energy, both in lean and fat tissue. It also causes a reduction in carbohydrate tolerance (and needs).

As a consequence, endomorphs benefit from a greater fat and protein diet with better carbohydrate management. For this kind of athlete, a diet consisting of 25% carbohydrates, 35% protein, and 40% fat would be a good starting point.
