The Best Way to Cook a Steak — Perfect for the Keto & Carnivore Diet

Steak is a staple for many carnivores and keto eaters due to its high-fat content. One of the best ways to cook a steak is to start out with a sous vide method, also called sous vide cooking. This is a traditional method for cooking via vacuum heat retention that uses a precision water bath to control the temperature and pressure. This helps lock in the juices and create a flavorful seared steak that’s tender and juicy.

Steak is one of the best foods you can eat on a ketogenic or carnivore diet — and it’s a great source of protein, which is the one macronutrient you want to get enough of every day. As you transition to a ketogenic diet, you may be wondering how to cook your steak to get the best results. There are a few different ways you can go about doing this, depending on how you prefer to cook.

I’ve tried a few different ways to cook steak, but this way of roasting in the pan and oven is my most faithful and favorite, and it’s practically life-changing!

His ingenious and foolproof method of preparing steaks is very easy to imitate and is my favorite way to prepare steaks.

This ingenious method is not only simple, but takes your steak to the next level! It is also a good option for those who do not have access to an outdoor grill, as this method uses a stove and oven instead. But I’m telling you, this preparation method will convince even the most die-hard barbecue fans to try it for themselves – a steak that tastes like it came straight from a haute cuisine steakhouse!

If you’re looking for an even easier method, you can also cook a delicious steak in the air conditioner!

For this traditional method, just season, sauté and cook!

What you need:

  • 1 boneless rib eye steak (or steak of your choice), 1 1/2 inches thick
  • Olive oil (or oil of choice), for the coating
  • Kosher salt and ground black pepper

I let the steaks come to room temperature first, then set the oven to 500ºF and put a cast iron skillet in the oven to warm them up. While the pan heats up, I rub the steaks with oil and sprinkle generously with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper.

When the oven reaches a temperature of 500º F, it’s time to cook the steaks. This part is crucial! A hot pan browns the steak and gives it the desired crispy crust on the outside.

I love that pleasant sound when the meat first enters the pan.

Put the pan on high heat and put a hot cast iron pan on top. Leave on the stove for a few minutes. Now sear the steaks for 30 seconds on each side, then return the cast iron pan to the oven at 500ºF.

Finish the steak quickly and easily in the oven!

For baking times, see Alton Brown’s instructions HERE. According to his instructions, the total cooking time for a medium-rare steak is about 4 minutes and for a medium-rare steak is about 6 minutes. Turn it over at the end of the cooking time. Note: the time may be longer or shorter depending on the thickness of the steak.

When the steaks are done, let the meat rest for 10 minutes to let the juices soak in and make it as tender as possible. Then it was time to eat! A juicy steak, ready to eat in less than 20 minutes? YES! So amazing and so delicious!

If you are a strict carnivore, you can do without butter and spices and enjoy the pure taste of a delicious rib-eye!

My advice: If you are cooking in cast iron, make sure your hands are well protected. I know from experience that cast iron gets very hot and that ordinary oven mitts do not always suffice! Try these heat-resistant silicone oven mitts that offer excellent protection.
