While juicing at home is the far more economical choice, in choosing between the effort of dealing with an older model juicer versus just shelling out $$$ for a juice that didn’t require 20 minutes of clean up, the decision was pretty clear. Until now…

These days, a morning green juice is about as ubiquitous as adding collagen and coconut cream to your a matcha latte. With juice shops popping up in even the most remote towns, more and more people from all walks of life are beginning to recognize the benefits of green juice (and purple, and bright yellow, too!). Made right, which is to say, filled with mostly veggies and not too much fruit, a fresh-pressed juice can be a valuable addition to your wellbeing – or even a gateway to a more healthful way of life if you’ve struggled to turn the corner. Packed with vitamins and minerals and, for some, easier to digest than a fiber-filled smoothie, a morning green juice could even help you kick your caffeine habit. With so many benefits, it’s easy to see why everyone loves it… What’s not so lovable? The hefty price tag that comes with that freshly-pressed elixir. With some juice bar orders topping $10, that juice habit of yours can add up quickly. Not only that, but fresh juice can begin to lose nutrients and flavor quickly, which is why that bottled version you grab from your corner juice bar on your rush to the office just doesn’t hold up to the kind made to order.

Clearly, the answer to having freshly made juice on hand at all times is to just make it yourself, right? But until recently, the offerings for at-home juicers were sorely lacking. Models were either large, loud, and bulky and/or far out of any reasonable price range. Trust me, I know, as the owner of what might be the loudest and most difficult to clean juicer on the planet that put a solid dent in my bank account back in 2003 (to be fair… it’s held up since 2003). These hulking beasts took up valuable counter space, lacked in extraction, and, while powerful, boasted the decibel level of a jet engine. On top of that, the high-speed centrifugal blades of a traditional juicer move so fast that they can actually heat up the liquid and kill off nutrients – really!

I hope whoever adopts my old juicer from the thrift store is very happy (and owns earplugs).

The Classic


  • 2 carrots, rinsed
  • 1 apple, halved with seeds removed
  • 1/2 -inch piece of fresh ginger, washed and peeled
  • Large handful fresh kale, rinsed
  • ½ lemon, peeled and sliced


Add ½ the apple to the juicer, followed by carrots, kale, ginger, and lemon. Finish with the second half of the apple. Enjoy!


Golden Ginger Turmeric


  • 1 mango, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 1 cup packed baby spinach
  • 1/2 -inch piece of fresh ginger, washed and peeled
  • 1/2 -inch piece of fresh turmeric, washed and peeled


Run all ingredients through the Hurom juicer. Top with a pinch of black pepper. Enjoy!


Celery Morning Jumpstart


  • 3 cups celery, washed and chopped
  • 1 handful parsley, rinsed
  • Optional: ¼ lime, peeled and sliced


Run all ingredients through the Hurom juicer. Add ½ cup chilled filtered water to the juice and mix. Enjoy!
