I spent President’s Day weekend in Portland and fell in love with the wellness scene there! I want to return in warmer weather so I can enjoy more of the city’s outdoor options, but for now am delighted with all the ways I stayed active, fed and outfitted on this trip. Here’s a rundown of FIT favorites across three categories of: things to do, food to eat, and places to shop.
THINGS TO DO
- Workout, soak and sauna at Knot Springs (Northeast) – Visiting Knot Springs was easily the highlight of my wellness weekend! Visitors can pay $65 for a workout/power yoga class and full access to the spa facilities (pools, steam room, sauna, showers). The main attraction is the soaking pools and sauna, which will detox and reenergize your body from the inside-out. Everything there was so relaxing and beautiful, from the airy yoga studio to the gorgeous Pendleton towels and aromatic bathroom products. You’ll want to move in, I sure did!
- Yoga followed by activewear shopping and delicious, nutritious food at Prasad (Northwest) – I chuckled upon learning that there are multiple yoga studios / cafes in Portland, but the general consensus is that Prasad is the best place to go. Upon entering the space you’ll see a corner full of cute yoga wear and then proceed onto a gorgeous studio. After class you can enjoy massive veggie bowls and fresh juices beside a relaxing water fountain. Can I get an “om, yeah”?
- Bike around on hourly rentals from Nike Biketown (pods are all over PDX). This is an active and super affordable way to see the city. Also the bikes are bright orange, so easy to spot!
- Walk / run around cute neighborhoods. Each of these two areas has a main street where the shops are, while the surrounding residential blocks are chock full of cute homes and gardens that give you a feel for what locals live like.
- Hawthorne in the 30s (Southeast)
- Alberta arts district in the 20s (Northeast)
FOOD TO EAT
- ¿Porque No? (Southeast) – Good Mexican with plenty of tasty seafood, gluten free options and great cocktails. The line may seem intimidating, but it moves quickly!
- Virtuous Pie (Southeast) – Pizzas and inspired side dishes made from 100% plant ingredients. This spot also gets major points for awesome design and vibes.
- Harlow (Southeast) or Prasad (Northwest)- Really tasty vegan food and juices, same menus! There are two locations throughout the city, but you can only get yoga and an activewear shop in with your veggies at the downtown location.
- Carioca – (Northeast) Acai bowls that have a cult following and yoga classes!
- Tea Bar (Northeast, Southeast, Northwest) – Cute spot for matcha and boba teas.
SHOPS TO VISIT
- Poler Stuff (Southwest) – This is one of the brand’s flagship stores and it doesn’t disappoint. Visit if you’re looking for gear that is majorly cool (no granola style here) and functional in the elements. Poler hats, jackets and accessories are my personal obsession.
- Field Trip (Southeast) – Bodily goods (apothecary, CBDs, oils, candles, wellness books, jewelry, etc). Just one step inside and you’ll be engulfed in an atmosphere that encourages self care and calm. Honorable mentions for shops with a similar vibe that deserve a visit are Mantel and the Yo Store!
- The Wild Unknown (Northeast) – This spiritual sanctuary is where to head if you’re in search of tarot cards, crystals, books and other ritual objects. The shop has a huge following on instagram, but only IRL visitors can partake in the shrine sits, tarot readings in the mirrored tarot house, and events.
- Frances May – Sells high end streetwear pieces that are perfect for athleisure looks. The sneaker, sweatshirts and Ts sold there are definitely spendy but seriously to die for.
