If you are like me, you love cocktails and spent the past 2 weeks imbibing at holiday parties. Now it’s time to reset and restore our livers and these recipes will do the trick! The drinks are super easy to make and pleasant tasting, so go ahead and kick the new year off by treating your body right.

It is important to take care of our livers because they work really hard for our bodies. Every day our livers flush toxins and break down what we consume to deliver optimum nutrients to our internal systems and regular our blood sugar (i.e. energy levels). The key to getting our liver back on track is lots of hydration and nutrition that promotes the acid and bile production so we can flush out the bad stuff. Assuming you have a well-stocked spice cupboard and some basic groceries, you can make these beverages without leaving the house!

Liver Detox Tea – Ayurvedic Seed Mixture

Ayurveda is a type of alternative / Eastern medicinal practice that originated in India but is now commonplace throughout many societies and especially in the wellness community. Ayurvedic lifestyle routines and treatments utilize natural herbs, minerals, oils and heat to promote bloodily health by focusing on our three “doshas”, which are thought to dictate our physiology and energy. I use Ayurvedic medicines as a complement to my other wellness regimes and have used the practice to deepen my mind-body awareness. We’ll delve more into Ayurveda in future posts, but for now you can check out this Ayurveda overview from the government’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. 

All three of the seeds used in this liver detox tea are thought to stimulate our digestive enzymes and promote secretion of gastric acid, which helps our liver break up fats and expel toxins (booze, drugs, pesticides, etc). They also encourage motion in our gastrointestinal tracts, which will address any bloat or heartburn you may feel.

INGREDIENTS

1 serving (easily make larger size by simply using equal parts of all seeds)

¼ tsp. coriander seeds
¼ tsp. cumin seeds
¼ tsp. fennel seeds
2 cups of water

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Bring water to boil in a small pot
  2. Add seed mixture and stir
  3. Let seeds boil for 7-10 minutes (flavor becomes stronger the longer you boil)
  4. Strain seeds and enjoy!

Liver Detox Tonic – Spicy Orange Juice Elixir 

This is a spicy, citrusy tonic that will shock your system back into action! Each ingredient plays a crucial role in supporting liver health. The ginger and turmeric help with nausea, inflammation and stimulates antioxidant enzymes that are key to speedy detoxification. Similarly, the acid from the lemon and orange juice act like a booster to the creation and excretion of bile. Finally, a dash of cayenne adds the perfect amount of heat and will help heal liver damage.

INGREDIENTS

1-2 servings

1″ piece of fresh ginger
3 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 cup orange juice
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
dash of cayenne pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Peel 1″ of ginger, cut in half
  2. Blend all ingredients together in blender
  3. Strain and enjoy chilled!
